As a solitary dreamer, my ambition has always been to be an airline pilot. At weekends, and indeed evening-times, following flights on the radar and watching them as they fly over outside is my greatest weakness. Living in the west of Ireland has its benefits, and the intermittent relief from rain allows me to see planes as they embark on their journey across the Atlantic Ocean - honestly one of the best sights in the world.
I am currently in my last year of secondary school and I am studying English, Irish, maths, biology, business, French and geography. If I get a sufficient number of points in my leaving certificate, I intend to pursue an Aeronautical Engineering course in the University of Limerick which will help me develop a greater insight into aircraft systems and their development.
My hobbies include sports such as gaelic football, camogie and swimming. I play for Mayo ladies gaelic football team at minor and senior levels, occupying a position as goalkeeper, or as I like to refer to it "the last line of defence" - also known as "Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS)" with regards to aviation terminology. However, I enjoy employing versatility and I play outfield for club football and hurling.
The seemingly unattainable career of an airline pilot sought permanent refuge in my mind from an early age, and every flight I have traveled on has advanced this career goal. Work experience at a maintenance facility in Shannon Airport was the catalyst for the realisation that being an airline pilot is achievable. Since then, I have met many great pilots who have encouraged me to pursue my dream no matter what, because no one but yourself can make it happen.
